Golf Instruction: 5 Simple Putting Setup Rules

Are you a player that is just learning how to putt? If this is the case there are a number of things that you will need to know about which will go so far in determining how to help you learn the perfect set up for a good game. Most beginner players these days know how to putt very easily, perhaps because of all the material that they come across online, from articles to videos on how to do this and do it right. Bearing that in mind, the following are some of the most important things that you need to know about putting:

  • Always get the ball to the hole
  • Aim as high up as you can to the cup
  • Pick out a spot for the ball on the green
  • Keep your focus on the ball
  • Forward press

Always get the ball to the hole

Depending on the speed of the greens that you are playing on, try and make sure that you can do everything possible to send the ball into the hole. If you do not do this, it will not get into the cup. As a matter of fact most professional players would actually recommend aiming around 18 inches away from the hole.

Aim as high up as you can to the cup

This is a very good way of making sure that your putt will be perfect, especially if you are going to make a break that might end further to the left or right. Do not make the mistake of not aiming high enough for you will miss the putt before it lands into the hole.

Pick out a spot for the ball on the green

Once you have had a really good study of the green, set the ball out nicely on the line and pick a spot. The spot you choose should be around 6 inches from the ball. This is a very good way of making sure that you will get a good follow through as you address the ball.

Keep your focus on the ball

This might sound like common sense to so many people, but rest assured that it can be an important tip for those who are not aware.

Forward press

The forward press is a typical posture when you are hitting your putts, so make sure that you do some good practice with this in mind.
